Merwin’s Wharf has become one of my kids’ favorite places to eat in Cleveland. To call this establishment, owned by the Cleveland Metroparks, simply a restaurant does not do it justice as Merwin’s Wharf is a gorgeous dining experience.
Located along the scenic Cuyahoga River at Irishtown Bend, Merwin’s Wharf offers some of the most scenic outdoor dining in Cleveland including amazing views of the Cuyahoga River, its unique bridges, as well as the Cleveland skyline. Unlike many restaurants with similarly stunning views, Merwin’s Wharf is not stuffy and is extremely welcoming to families.
They are so laid back that they even offer games such as a giant Jenga and cornhole for patrons of all ages to play while they are dining. I wish more restaurants had these types of activities as it promotes family togetherness and interaction while waiting for the meal. Isn’t that what dining out as a family is all about?
We started our lunch with an order of Vega-nachos per the recommendation of our server. Wow!! These crisp flour tortilla chips with black bean humus, guacamole, pico de gallo, freshly pickled jalapeños, and black olives were a total home run! I could have easily eaten the entire plate by myself. Perhaps next time I will order this as my meal — don’t judge.
Only my 5-year-old ordered from the kids menu which featured standard kid favorites: hamburger, cheeseburger, chicken fingers, macaroni & cheese, and grilled cheese. You can order the chicken fingers either grilled or fried and all the meals include a children’s soft drink. The burgers and grilled cheese also include a side item.
The rest of us ordered from the regular menu. I ordered the fish tacos which included 3 tacos and were way more than I could eat in one sitting. In fact all of the items we ordered were very generous portions, which meant lots of leftovers to take home and enjoy at another meal! My 10-year-old devoured her fiesta burger. However, the true standout among our meals was definitely the spinach and bacon mac & cheese.
As we were finishing our meal, we were fortunate to get to watch an enormous barge travelling down the Cuyahoga River. We were in complete awe of this ship. This was the cherry on top of an already fabulous dining experience.
After we finished our meal, we walked the path along the Cuyahoga RIver for a bit then watched the skaters in the park behind the restaurant. It was a fabulous way to enjoy a sunny afternoon in Cleveland.
