Driving down Euclid Avenue, you can’t miss the enormous pink and blue cupcake beckoning you into Colossal Cupcakes. This is exactly what happened to us last weekend as we drove down Euclid to check the renovation of Public Square. The kids saw the sign and were dying to give it a try, really who can blame them?
When we walked in, I was blown away by the incredibly cute, pink-a-tastic decor. Just check out the awesome pink chairs. There is also bar seating as well as seating at more traditional ice cream parlor-like tables. However, we chose to eat like royalty in these fabulous pink seating options. The entire store is decked out beautifully. It’s every 12-year-old girl’s dream come true!
They also have an incredibly cute soda stand that features Colossal’s old-fashioned soda. All their sodas are made with cane sugar and are caffeine-free. So your kids will only be jumping off the walls from their sugar high without an added boost of caffeine! Their flavors include old time favorites such as Strawberry, Root Beer, Orange, Vanilla Cream, Black Cherry, and Ginger Beer. Spring water is also available.
They also have may hot beverages available to keep the chill off during the bitter Cleveland winters. They include gourmet coffee, magical herbal tea, and whimsical hot chocolate. The hot chocolate is topped with a homemade whipped cream cheese fluff! How amazing does that sound?
Now onto why we really came into the shop…cupcakes! First, these cupcakes are ENORMOUS! With a name like Colossal Cupcakes you can’t sell regular or even double-sized cupcakes. I would say these are three times the size of your standard cupcake. They were also even more beautiful than the store. Each cupcake looked heavenly.
We were also blown away by the variety of flavors. Be prepared to take some time to decide on your order. I really wanted to try them all. We are talking banana split, Neapolitan, hot chocolate, Boston dream, snickerdoodle, and Santa says (Ho Ho) just to name a few. They also had some more traditional flavors such as red velvet and confetti available.
We finally decided on banana split, banana cream pie, red velvet, and Oreo cheesecake. Let me start with the frosting. To me, the frosting can totally make or break a cupcake. This frosting is spectacular. It is just the right amount of sweet and absolutely smooth. I would call it the perfect mix of a buttercream and whipped frosting. It had the rich flavor of butter cream with the smoother, lighter elements of a whipped frosting.
The cake portion of the banana split and banana cream pie cupcakes were moist and had just the right amount of flavor. The banana split cupcake had a slight lemon taste which perfectly offset the rich chocolate drizzle on top. Both the red velvet and Oreo cheesecake cupcakes were slightly dry, but still excellent.
Colossal Cupcakes also features a cake shake. You pick your favorite cupcake, and Colossal Cupcakes shakes it up with their gourmet vanilla ice cream. I can’t wait to return this summer and try this fabulous treat!
Colossal Cupcakes are GIGANTIC so remember this as you see the price. They are $3.75 per cupcake or a dozen for $42. They also offer a 12 pack mini samplers for $18. These are definitely a special occasion cupcake! Now how many special occasions can I come up with to buy some?
