Cleveland Family Activities on Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2016

IMG_3334In remembrance and celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life many Cleveland museums and cultural centers are offering free or reduced admission and activities. Here is a list of area activities to enjoy with your family. Be sure to check out the link before planning to attend for complete information. As you enjoy these free offerings, please take a moment to reflect the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Severence Hall Community Open House. Severence Hall is offering free instrumental, vocal, and dance performances in addition to on-going family activities honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Doors open at 11:30am and performances continue through 5pm.

The Great Lakes Science Center is offering free general admission from 10 am through 5 pm.  They will have science demonstrations including Wild Weather and the Big Science Show throughout the day.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is offering free admission from 10 am to 5:30pm.  Admission includes fabulous live performances, education programs and family activities that will highlight how people use music to find their voice and create a sense of community.

DIscovery Day at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. The Cleveland Musuem of Natural History is offering free general admission from 10 am to 4 pm.  This is a special opportunity as curators will open their labs and show many specimens not typically on display.  There will also be live animal demostrations and a craft.

The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage is offering a free Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration.  The celebration includes free admission from 11 am through 5pm.  In addition to touring the museums exhibits, visitors can participate in a craft, enjoy life music, and listen to a panel discussion on the impact and legacy of Carl & Louis Stokes.

The Greater Cleveland Aquarium is offering a $10 admission ticket valid January 18, 2016 with a donation of $1 or more to the United Black Fund of Greater Cleveland, Inc.  UBF volunteers will be present to accept donations and provide vouchers for the discounted admission.

The Cleveland Museum of Art is a free event from 11 am – 4 pm entitled The Power of Words and Expression: Celebrating the LIfe of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event includes hands-on family are activities, gallery activities, art stories, and live performances.

The Cleveland Botanical Gardens will be offering free admission from 10 am – 5 pm with a children’s craft activity at 1pm.

Laurel School is hosting its 6th Annual Day of Service Celebrating the Legacy of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. starting at 9am. The event is free and open to the public.  Advanced registration required.

Penitentiary Glen Reservation is hosting a Fun Day Monday with free activities both indoors and outdoors including live animal chats, scavenger hunts, a campfire with s’mores, crafts, and more.

Brecksville Nature Center is offering a morning of fun from 10 am until noon.  Drop you kids off for a nature hike, games, and other activities. Advanced registration is required.

Family Day at Akron Art Museum will have free family activities involving a variety of mediums from 12 pm through 4 pm.

The Akron Zoo is offering free admission from 11 am – 4pm with special crafts and story times.

The Music Settlement is presenting a Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Concert from 3 pm – 4:30pm.  The performance is preceded by a vocal performance at 2 pm in the faculty lounge.
